Whether you're a pool hustler like Tom Cruise in "The Color of Money" or don't know how to hold a cue (hey, maybe you're just hustling us), the APA (American Poolplayers Association) offers a fun night out each week for all skill levels. Here's why you should chalk up and give it a try.

APA Pool is All About Inclusivity and Accessibility

Not good at pool? No problem. The league's unique handicap system ensures fair competition. Players are ranked on a scale from 2 (beginner) to 7 (expert), whereas lower-level players have to win fewer games than their more accomplished counterparts. Each team has to have a mix of skill levels, which ensures that everyone, regardless of experience, has a vital role in their team's success. Beyond skill level, you'll find a mix of men and women of all races, creeds, day jobs, side hustles, and hobbies. Everyone is welcome.

Shoot at a Variety of Locations

Playing across Brooklyn and Queens, you'll find yourself in everything from dark neighborhood dive bars with one 7-foot coin-operated pool table tucked in the back to large pool halls full of 9-foot tables where you hear the crack of cue balls echoing throughout the place. Each venue has its own vibe, and each table has its own quirks, making play and strategies different each week.

Strategy Behind Your Shots

APA isn't just about hitting shots and sinking balls; it's like chess on felt. You'll learn that sometimes, a missed shot isn't a failure—it's a calculated play to leave your opponent stuck behind your balls or far in the corner, cursing under their breath. Team captains carefully plot player matchups to leverage handicaps to maximize every player's potential. The mental game is addictive, and by the end of the season, you'll find yourself thinking two or three moves ahead, even off the table.

The Drama of the Game

While fun is the endgame for each night, that doesn't mean things don't get intense. Players want to win, and you can feel it in the air. I'm a very laid-back guy who rarely lets the anxiety of a tension-filled situation get to me. Still, even I can feel the pressure when you're shooting the eight ball, and everyone in the room is holding their breath, focused on you and your potential game-winning shot.

You'll routinely witness the experienced veteran dissect the table like a surgeon, and scrappy rookies write their own underdog stories by pulling off big upsets.

And winning does matter. The top teams get invited to a regional tournament with cash prizes. Do well there, and your team gets a trip to play in the final Vegas championship. But whether you win or lose, grabbing a drink at the bar is the best way to celebrate your match or commiserate with your team before returning to life outside of pool.

A Winning Combination

The APA Brooklyn-Queens League is more than just a pool league—it's a community where players can hone their skills, make lasting friendships, and experience the excitement of competitive play. Whether you're in it for the fun, the improvement, or the shot at glory, there's something for everyone in this vibrant league. If you're a pool enthusiast in the area, it's well worth checking out!
